"Forever Young" is a song from German synthpop recording act Alphaville's 1984 debut album of the same name. The single was a strong hit in Scandinavia and in the European German-speaking countries in the same year.
Though the single achieved more success in the United States than in the United Kingdom, it was not the group's highest-charting European hit. It failed to reach the American top 40 despite 3 separate US single releases, "Forever Young" became one of the signature songs of the band and it has subsequently been covered by numerous artists.
The single reached number 65th position on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the top 40 on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/ Club Play Singles.
The song was jointly composed by the three founders of the Alphaville team, who were better known under the pseudonyms Frank Martens, Bernhard Lloyd and Marian Gold, in 1982. Then they recorded a demo version of the composition. Actually, Forever Young is the first name of their team.
Already a year after the song appeared, singer Laura Branigan quail “Forever Young” and included it in her album “Hold Me”, and started the tradition when she performs her “encore” at concerts.
In 1987, the German punk band "Die Goldenen Zitronen" remade the song in its own way, calling it "Für immer Punk" ("Punk Forever" (Forever Punk)), performed by its invited vocalists from Slime, Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte, each of which he brought something of his own to the overall sound, like Marian Gold himself, performing original vocals.
In 1996, the Canadian Eurodance group Temperance released a cover version of the hit, which rose to the eighth line in the Canadian dance chart.
Other performers include Tracy Huang, DJ Space C, David Monte Cristo, DJ Company, Karel Gott (who performed the German-language version “Für immer jung” in 2000, as well as Czech option “Být stále mlád” in 2006), Bushido rapper (in 2008, along with Karel Gott, again in German), Paul Michiels, Dune, B-Charme, BnH, Wakin Chau, Fire & Ice, Interactive, Ella, Tune Up !, Axel Rudi Pell, Youth Group, Wayne Wonder and Atrocity metal band.
In 2001, the Swedish band Ainbusk translated the song into their native language and sang it as a Christmas song called “Förevigt nu” (“Now forever”).
In 2009, rapper Jay-Z used the basis of the song for his track “Young Forever” from the album “The Blueprint 3”.
British pop group One Direction in 2010 also released a cover version of "Forever Young".
